Sandra Milliken

Sandra is a graduate of the University of New England where she majored in music studies. She also holds a Masters degree in choral conducting from the University of Queensland. Sandra has several performance qualifications from both Trinity College and the Australian Music Examinations Board and manages her own music teaching practice, specialising in piano and voice. Sandra is a qualified classroom music teacher and has experience in both primary and secondary classroom music.

Sandra has had a long involvement with choral singing and conducting, and has won awards for her achievements in both areas. She is a musical director with the Queensland Youth Choir Inc. and currently conducts VoiceWorks, the QYC’s senior ensemble. During 1999, Sandra worked part-time at the University of Queensland, lecturing in the Master’s Degree Program as well as the Summer Music Program. During that time she conducted the university’s premiere choir Concentus. In 2000, Sandra established Chanterelle Women's Choir.

Sandra is a highly proficient accompanist who has worked with choirs, ensembles and solo performers in Australia, England and the USA.

For four months in 2001, Sandra travelled overseas on a Churchill Fellowship to further her studies in choral conducting, vocal/choral pedagogy and the management of youth and women's choirs. During this time she visited 56 choirs in England, Sweden, Finland, the United States of America and Canada, working with and observing many international choral experts.

Since returning from her Churchill fellowship experience, Sandra has turned her hand to composing, specialising in choral music. Her works are currently published by the Finnish Music Publishing Company, SULASOL.

Sandra is in demand as an adjudicator and workshop clinician, travelling extensively within Australia. She was the founding director of the choral program of the Northern Territory Youth Music Camp and has conducted workshops for the Queensland Early Music Society, the Canberra Choral Society and various school and community choirs. In November 2001 Sandra was guest conductor at the Asia Pacific Activities Conference (APAC) Choir Festival in Shanghai. In January 2002, she travelled to Finland to give choral workshops and lectures on Australian Choral Music at several leading tertiary institutions. In 2003 she will present a paper on Australian choral music at The Phenomenon of Singing International Symposium IV in St John’s, Newfoundland, Canada.

Sandra has served as a committee member of the Australian National Choral Association’s Queensland Chapter and is a regular contributor to ANCA Notes and A ChorusLine, writing on vocal technique and choral pedagogy.
